Baby Photography Tips for Charming Baby Photos

Here are a few baby photography tips that will help ensure that the images you produce really reflect the enchanting beauty of the new addition. Whether you are taking images of your own child, or you are in the business of capturing some of those first precious moments for others, you want to make sure to get the best possible shots.

Shoot With a Good Lens and a Wide Aperture

A good quality lens which can open up nice and wide will help you take photographs you might otherwise miss.

Most likely you will be taking many of these shots indoors, and in low light. So the first of our baby photography tips is to get hold of a decent portrait lens, like a 50mm prime lens) if you are using a ‘full-frame’ camera body, or perhaps a 28mm prime lens 28mm prime lens if your camera has a cropped-sensor, which opens up to an aperture of 2.4 if possible. These lenses can be costly but will help with letting more light in through the lens because of the large opening of the aperture.

Of course the normal 50 mm lens will work also. Try adding more light where necessary by way of lamps and windows, open your aperture as wide as possible, and using a tripod in case of movement, are important tips to keep in mind when capturing the image of a moving baby.

Tip #2–Get Down On Their Level

Getting down to the level of the subject will help you to fill your frames with the subject and not all of the unwanted clutter that may be looming around. It will also help you to convey the warmth and personality of the baby.

Try to capture various angles and perspectives. In some cases, using a large aperture to focus sharply on a particular area, such as the feet and blurring out the back ground may give you a beautiful image that you may want to call art! So get creative. You may capture some pretty amazing images.

Try Black and White

The third of our baby photography tips is to try capturing black and white images. It might sound slightly counter intuitive, but a monochrome palette can really help to emphasize the warmth, softness and downright cuddle-ability of your bundle of joy. Also keep in mind that because of the absence of color, when shooting in black and white, form and composition become very important.

Keep Your Camera With You

The fourth of our baby photography tips is to keep your camera nearby. You want to be able to capture those unexpected moments. With new babes, those special moments arrive when we least expect them.

You can also make the moments happen. Keep objects nearby that will help you get the attention of the baby, such as a bell or a whistle. When inside placing the baby near a window with natural light also helps when your lighting is not the best. Try to avoid ‘on camera flash’ if possible, as this tends to create the dreaded red eye in your photos.
