Commercial Photography Tips to Help Broaden Your Skills!

This selection of commercial photography tips will help you take the first steps into this exciting area. If you’re thinking of trying to earn a living from your art, you may well be drawn to commercial photography. Commercial photography involves photographic done to show case a specific product or products with the intent of selling or promoting for your clients. Your photos may end up in spaces as small as a brochure to a large bill board, and any place in-between, depending on your clients needs.

Tip #1 Be Prepared to Showcase Your Skills

When a client asks you to shoot something for them, the chances are they’re either going to give you something really specific (like, “this bottle of cleaning liquid”) or really vague (“show me people having fun”). Either way, it’s important to explore the idea and make sure you aren’t being too narrow in your interpretation. If you are asked to shoot something specific, try showing the subject in a new light. For example, get close, or try shooting from an unusual angle. Try showing the subject in an unexpected context.

Tips #2 Stage Your Shots

Think about the point of view. View the subject from all possible angles. Think about the design element of “line” when setting up your shots. The element of ‘line” done correctly, is a major factor in the success of the communication. Remember that “line,” whether diagonal, horizontal or vertical, should lead the viewer around the image. The flow of the image should be easy to follow.

Tip # 3. Do the Product and Your Client Justice

You are the sales person for your clients products. You want to make sure that the subject is memorable to the viewer. You will be creating professional, attractive promotional materials to be used in advertising. Make sure when accepting a job that you have the proper lighting and equipment to do the shoot justice.

Tips #4– Network

We all have to start somewhere. It is important to network with people who are doing what you want to do. You may start off small in the beginning but you can work your way up. A good place to start is to check for commercial photography “meet up” groups in your area.
