Think about where your interest lie. And then, specialize. For example, are you a sports photographer? If so, what makes your sports shots special. Is it the way you stop action, or the way you show motion?

Maybe you are interested in Fine art photography. What is your specific subject matter? Are you interested in showing the emotion of the faces you capture or the inspiration of the rosebud opening? In other words, you need to make sure that your images have some consistency. This is how you will stand out from the crowd of many. Choose a genre and stick to it for a while. Build an impressive portfolio that will brand your name.

Tips #2–Stay In the Game, No Matter What!

With so many people taking images these days, it can be a little frustrating for someone trying to make a name for themselves. Don’t give up. Take intentional photos everyday and watch how your images stand out from the snap shot photographers.

With digital photography, this is an easy task. If you are a sports photographer, search for events in your area. If you are a Fine arts photographer, try setting up some shots in your home or studio. Just keep shooting. The more you shoot the better you will become. You will learn a lot from the mistakes you make.

Get some business cards, and let others know what you are doing. Set up a website to showcase your best images. You never know who might be looking.

Tips #3–Be Professional

When presenting your work to clients or galleries, make sure your images are edited correctly, and that you have a good variety of images to show. No less than ten and no more than twenty, unless the client request something different. Keep your images consistent as mentioned above. For example, if you are a portrait photographer, don’t mix flowers into the portfolio to fill space. If you know a client likes to see a architectural photography, don’t show her landscapes, because you think they are beautiful shots. If presenting to a magazine, look through the magazine to see what kind of images are your presented on the pages.

Tip #4–Network, Everywhere You Go

Well, almost everywhere:) Don’t be afraid to let people know who you are and what you do. Being a photographer can sometimes be a lonely business. Most of us are so focused on building our portfolios, that we forget about what’s happening around us. Find others in your area that are interested in photography. Attend gallery and museum showing and lectures. Join the local Chamber. There is always some sort of meeting going and since you are among a group of business people like yourself, you may be able to find some work.

Try to find a “meet up” group in your area. Just Google “photography meet up group.” You will find like minded people who may be able to help you market your work or have some good ideals that you may want to implement.

The most important photography marketing tip that we hope to convey here is that you have to market you. So keep shooting and be professional about it.
